Yes Epsom is crazy, yes you have to set off last week to get there, yes you might as well stay there on Friday night as opposed to trying to get back to Newmarket only to turn round and go straight back, yes it’s probably the stupidest bit of land to build a racetrack on BUT our derby is still the envy of the World and today should be an absolute cracker.
We have the potential wonder horse in Dawn Approach who after sweeping all before him as a two year old won the Guineas on his reappearance at Newmarket. For me I cannot see him staying a mile and a half as when I went down to the paddock before he ran at newmarket he looked like a sprinter to me. Don’t get me wrong this is a very high class horse but he is so quick the jockey will have to put him to sleep for the first mile and that is very difficult here. At the odds he is a lay for me and I know a few of the big rails bookmakers are going to puff their chests out and try and lay this one so expect him to drift on track if you do fancy him it might be better to wait.
So TGD if you are against the fave who will win I hear you cry. Well, I expect a big run from the German horse Chopin who it is rumoured has already been down to the start and put a towel over his stall! This is a serious horse who disposed of a good field last time as though they were stood still. He has travelled over well by all accounts and will take some stopping but there is one horse in the field who has the scope to beat them all. The horse is Mars trained by Aiden O’Brian who today has only his third ever race and second ever on turf. By Galileo out of a danehill mare since day 1 this has been the day this horse has been prepared for. He won an all weather maiden first time in a canter and was immediately singled out. Many saw his Guineas run as disappointing but as usual Joseph O’Brian gave him far too much to do and he flew in the last furlong. I understand his work in the last month has been breathtaking and Richard Hughes has been booked. Hughes won the Oaks yesterday so could be in for a magical weekend. Mars is still 16/1 with Paddy Power and I expect him to be backed on course so take that price.
Have a great Derby Day wherever you are, I will be there, no other country does it better or finishes a big race on a hill which falls away to one side!
Back next Saturday.
