British Summertime don’t you just love it, Penny came through to the front room on Monday to inform the Don that there was a two week long heatwave on the way having read it in the newspaper.
I take it after the last forty eight hours of pouring rain that the said newspaper has sacked the person that does the weather and put them in charge of the xmas club. One thing is for certain for one of the great handicaps of the year the Northumberland Plate most Trainers and owners this time last week banked on this being good fast Summer ground.
Well instead they have good honest Winter jumping ground because as I write the going is soft and this great race is now a real test of stamina. There is a gamble developing on last years winner Il De Ray and it’s easy to see why as this fellow loves the mud but I have a sneaky suspicion the horses best days are behind him. Ardlui for Allan King will be a warm order too after a good return on good ground at Ripon. He has won on soft but is such a lovely moving sort on good ground that I just feel he would have been better without this deluge.
The horse which carries the burden of expectation of being the Don’s Saturday special is the Jonjo O’Neil trained Tominator who has to lug top weight of ten stone. I’m not too concerned by that because this horse has a lot of class and is working as well as they have ever had him. Jonjo has a line with his recent Ascot winner Well Sharp and Tominator would be above him in the pecking order. He has won on all grounds but I was really taken with him over two furlongs further when he was third in the Cesarawitch last October where the ground was very similar to what he will encounter today. Take the 8/1 and back him each way with four places up for grabs.
After a tough Ascot the Don has got back to work with a vengeance this week with four account bets yielding three winners and a second. I’m relentless in my search for winners for members and that unlike the british weather will never change.
Let me take off your betting this Summer and if you are going racing today take a brolly!
Back next Saturday.
