The Gambling Don

August 31, 2013 By admin Leave a Comment

The Don and Penny read Andy Bell’s column last Sunday with a mixture of amusement and horror. My Amusement at the memory of him and his pals hacking away at BetFan’s resident poseur Simon Holden’s Boss suit. You know when you are watching and know you shouldn’t laugh but then move to get a better view.

Penny’s horror was at hearing me described as an anorak and reading about me nearly being thrown in the ouse (Strangely I hadn’t mentioned it). Mr Bell is a very welcome addition to BetFan’s roster but he would do well to remember revenge is a dish best served straight from the freezer!!

Anyway I’m off to Sandown today where I expect to see John Gosden trained Kingman maintain his unbeaten record in the Group 3 Solario Stakes. Kingman made his debut at Newmarket where he was hugely impressive in demolishing a good field. I’ve seen him work and he is a big unfurnished sort who will make a better three year old. The Newmarket hype machine has gone into double overdrive with one seasoned workwatcher saying he is the best he has seen in years he quickly coughed and said except Frankel of course. From what I have seen and from what I have heard from the right faces including from within the yard this lad is very good. Gosden is cleverly trying to reign in all this hyperbole but secretly is hugely excited. He will be odds on later but you must get a look at him. I’m looking forward to seeing how he takes the preliminaries though it’s a small field there will be a decent crowd. If he wins and wins well the sky’s the limit and my hunch is he would go straight to the Racing Post Trophy.

The rest of the Sandown card isn’t up to much so for our Saturday Special we are off to the North West and the beautiful walled city of Chester. They stage a superb card tomorrow but the race we are concentrating on is the 3.30 the Chester Stakes a Listed Handicap. Our fave is the impressive last time winner Sun Central trained by William Haggas. This horse was fancied for the Ebor but the downpours put paid to that and he was pulled out on the morning. My concern here is that he is drawn high and even in distance races that can cost you so much ground so drawn 10 of 10 I’m looking elsewhere. The horse I strongly fancy here is course specialist Star Lahib who simply loves this track. He has won here and a big handicap at Haydock this year but the key today is he is stepped up in trip. I think this will bring about improvement as he finishes races strongly. He will be ridden by the top jockey at the track Francis Norton and at 5/1 is a strong win bet for me.

Lets have a good day i.e see kingman show he is a future superstar and let Star Lahib bring home the cash! Join my private service and receive every bet I do every day, trust in the Don!

Back next Saturday.
