I’m writing this weeks column from a Hotel in York before heading to Pontefract this afternoon en route to Newmarket where I will stay one day before heading to Goodwood or just outside where I have accommodation for the Glorious meeting. No I’m not avoiding the wife just showing how busy this time of year is.
The ground at York has been as fast as I’ve seen in many years up here and its been as hot as I’ve ever seen on a British track. This place is a class act in the way it treats everyone from horses to the punters in the cheapest sections and I wish some of the Southern Tracks including my beloved Newmarket would spend some time here and get some ideas.
This week will be a visual treat if nothing else for anyone going to Goodwood for the first time as nothing prepares you for the stunning nature of the place. The beauty stops when we get out on the track as winner finding is tough but not impossible. I tell my private members every year and will again this year that over the five days we will get hard luck stories but we will also probably be the beneficiaries of others bad luck. The problem here is everyone wants to race up the far rail and traffic jams occur.
It looks like we will get fast ground pretty much all week and all eyes will be on the mighty Kingman on Wednesday. Lets hope he runs because if it’s very firm he won’t be risked although looking at the form book the faster the ground the more he wins by. One word of caution to you buying money experts who think he is a cert this place is undulating and quirky like Newmarket where he got turned over!!
We have it all next week, Group 1s and big field sprint handicaps and after a stop start month I’m looking to really get after this place. We have done well here in the past and I intend that to happen again. I will spend tonight and tomorrow in the study mapping out the whole week and speaking to contacts so nothing will be left to chance.
I’m at Pontefract for a good card but our Sunday cracker runs at Ascot. It’s fantastic to be giving you a good FLAT racing bet on a Sunday thank you BHA you see you can put good flat cards on Sunday’s after all. We are in the 3.05 and the horse is Pallasator available at 3/1 with Coral. Pallasator is a big galloping type who will be serving it up to the others, this is his last stop before a tilt at the Ebor and the Prescott horses look in perfect shape. I think he will be very hard to beat today and will add to Sir Marks steadily growing tally for the season.
Have a great day and a great Glorious Goodwood meeting and as always Trust in the Don!
Back next Sunday.
