Wetherby yesterday and the Charlie Hall Chase, the best chase run so far this year but it left a sour taste in the Don’s mouth and many others regarding the performance of the Favourite Silvianoconte.
I was at Newmarket for a fairly ordinary late season card but all eyes were on Wetherby in the members bar and distinctly unimpressed with what we saw. Silviano had won this race before so there was real hope on good ground against a poor field. This is the reigning King George winner and was facing a poor field. Paul Nicholls had been bullish as had my con at the yard yet a worrying interview with the Trainer just before set alarm bells ringing.
Nicholls offered the view that today’s race would put the horse spot on for its next race at Haydock, the Betfair Chase. That appeared to contradict what had been said early and what we saw for me anyway appeared a horse having a run out as opposed to a horse attempting to win a valuable race and respected handicap.
Silviano led and jumped well but unlike the year he won just lobbed along never stretching the opposition and never chased along. For an even money shot and star it was hugely disappointing viewing and he was picked off with little effort finishing virtually last.
I suspect in three weeks time we will see a very different horse but if you did your dough yesterday that will be of little comfort. Many top horses are left with something to work on after their first run but this was a stone below the horses form and looked poor.
Hopefully and if my info is correct a horse making its seasonal debut at Carlisle today will be significantly fitter. The race is the 3.45 the Colin Parker Listed Chase and the horse I want you to be on is the Nicky Richards trained Eduard @13/8 with bet365.
Eduard had an excellent season last year culminating in a victory at Ayr on Scottish National day and that was his third victory for the year. I know this yard well and have done for many years and they think they have a potential superstar on their hands. He isn’t the biggest of horses and has been fairly easy get fit and he is ready for today’s challenge. By contrast his main challenger Hollywell carries some severe stable worries. Jono’s horses have ran terribly for the past fortnight and there must be real concerns whether he will show his best. Even his best might not be enough to cope with Eduard anyway.
I’m having a good bet on Eduard today so lets hope he wins and goes on to much better things.
