So the Flat season is over and The Don is taking the opportunity to issue some Gambling Don Awards. All views are the Dons and not the view of any other BetFan Racing Expert or Andy Bell!
Top Horse
It’s horses who make this game and my horse of the season is The Great Gatsby from the Northern yard of Kevin Ryan.
This horse has won multiple Group 1s including the French Derby where he destroyed the field. He will be best remembered for beating Australia in the Irish Champions Stakes. Not an expensive purchase he also showed the brilliance of his Trainer Kevin Ryan who given the horse is as good as there is.
Top Jockey
No originality here Ryan Moore, the title may have gone to Hughes but he looks to be past his best to me whereas Moore is at the peak of his powers. My best memory this year is seeing him at Chester and realising he is mentally and physically well ahead of all others as he plots his way through a race.
Top Trainer
A great year for Newmarket with Gosden and Varian doing superbly well but my vote goes up to Yorkshire with David O’Meara who is simply unstoppable. This young man has a touch of genius and reminds me of Aiden O’Brian. Rumour is he could be Newmarket bound for a top job, remember where you heard that first. He is going to the top and fast.
Top Racecourse
Goodwood and Chester are wonderful whereas Newmarket my beloved home track and Ascot need to respect their customers more BUT it has to be York who yet again provide the best racing and the best atmosphere. Another great year on the Knavesmire.
Lets hope the Jumps season is as much fun and as profitable for the Don and his followers, we made massive, massive profits.
