After a rotten weeks weather the great news is that the Betfair Chase is on at Haydock today after a week when many meetings have gone to the wall.
Here in Newmarket we have had torrential downpours and I know it’s been the same all over so at least the great race is on.
It is a race which produced the most emotional end to a race I’ve seen when Kauto defied age and logic and produced a devastating display to win last year. Paul Nicholls is a tough winner who doesn’t suffer fools or go out of his way to be friendly to anyone but he was moved like the rest of us last year when Kauto made all. He then of course went on to climb a bigger mountain by winning the King George and is enjoying a much deserved retirement.
I can’t promise you we will see the emotion today but what we will see for certain is a tough high quality race on very testing ground. We have the former champ Long Run making his seasonal reappearance and the word from the yard is that he is in rude health.
Long Run has been unlucky to be around in the same era as Denman and Kauto Star but lets not forget he is a Gold Cup and King George winner.
He will take plenty of beating but I think he will be beaten by the recent Charlie Hall Chase Winner Silviniaco Conti. He was simply devastating at Wetherby and the fact he has already had a run will be crucial. I think Ruby will try and get away down the backstraight and pressurise Long Run’s jumping which he did so well on Kauto Star.
Silviniaco Conti is available at 5/2 with Paddy Power and that looks massive in my book so that is the Don’s Saturday Special.
Have a great weekends racing and remember you can be on all my bets and the very best Inside info going by joining The Gambling Don’s private service.
Back next Saturday.
